MEarth Carmel - Hilton Bialek Habitat

MEarth Carmel

Hilton Bialek Habitat, 2008

Pivoting toward the important field of sustainable architecture and design, MEarth was granted $500,000 in seed funding from a school bond measure to pursue a state-of-the-art green building at The Habitat, with construction culminating in a grand opening in 2012.
Carmel Unified School District: MEarth staff members provide innovative, hands-on instruction to students in the Carmel Unified School District (CUSD) – from the six-week “Ecoliteracy” curriculum for all sixth-grade students of Carmel Middle School and the school’s World Language, Science, History, and English-Language Arts classes.
Monterey Peninsula Unified School District: The Habitat has an outstanding record teaching place-based hands-on programs to students from Seaside, Marina, Monterey and Salinas. Since 2004 we have offered programming to over 7,000 students from these underserved areas, and we now have programming that serves over 1,000 community students each year. School day, after-school programs and summer camps introduce sustainability and healthy lifestyle choices to the community students who attend our programs each year. Program content focuses students in the pressing environmental issues that face our planet such as: habitat destruction, invasive species, pollution (specifically plastic pollution), overpopulation and over-consumption.
Participants in MEarth programs also include the Boys & Girls Clubs of Monterey County, The RISE Program at CSUMB, and many area elementary, middle and high schools, including All Saints Episcopal Day School in Carmel Valley. Sixth graders at Stevenson School in Pebble Beach collaborate with MEarth staff at The Habitat during their year-long biome project to learn about soils and biodiversity.

FoodConnect

Our FoodConnect programs immerses students of all ages in the simple joy of learning how to grow, harvest, and cook foods that are healthy for both the people who eat them and the land on which they are grown.

CommunityConnect

Our CommunityConnect program provides opportunities for our local community to connect with our habitat and programs. We welcome community members to volunteer in our gardens and kitchen, and to participate and learn at regular mission-driven community events.
